Medium red. Cherry cough drop, plus and a suggestion of sweet butter on the nose. Sweet red fruits show good intensity and energy, but also the roundness and sweetness of the vintage's better examples. Fresher and purer than the entry-level Barolo, and juicier on the finish, which features sweet tannins, a smoky, tarry nuance and excellent length.

Germano's 2009 Barolo Cerretta is much more open and inviting than the Prapò, but it, too, has plenty of structure. Here the fruit takes on shades of plums, black cherries, mint, spices and licorice all in a creamy relatively voluptuous style for Serralunga. Iron, tar, smoke and scorched earth round out the finish.

Commune of Serralunga. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Sweetly concentrated strawberry fruit with a hint of fruitcake and perfectly balancing acidity, followed by the famous Serralunga tannins. Deceptively approachable but will last. (WS)

Ettore Germano's 2009 Barolo Cerretta shows added layers of spice and tobacco that play a supporting role to generous fruit layers. The warm 2009 growing season has left its mark in terms of the ripeness and softness of the fruit. The Cerretta does a very good job of containing all that fruity generosity within the firmer context of its tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.
