Unfurling in the glass with a rich bouquet of baked berry fruit, licorice and spices, the 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Épenots is medium to full-bodied, firm and chewy, with a muscular chassis of stem tannins that lend asperity to the finish. Admirers of the style will claim that it will blossom with time, but this commentator remains unconvinced.

Dark crimson. Light nose and some freshness. Grainy and appetising – much more so than the Fremiers and Croix Noires. Lively and satisfying even if there is a little too much oak. (JR)
