Score 90/100 · Drink 2019-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2018

Pio Cesare's 2014 Barolo Ornato is a pretty, beguiling wine, although I expected to see a bit more depth and overall textural resonance. Usually much more of a powerhouse, the Ornato is decidedly medium in body in 2014. Even so, it offers a good bit of persistence, with hints of orange zest, mint, kirsch and dried flowers that add complexity to the Nebbiolo fruit.

With robust fruit exclusively sourced from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2014 Barolo Ornato is a bold and loosely knit red wine. Keeping in line with the characteristics of this celebrated vineyard site, the wine offers extra density, softness and texture. The results are plump with ripe fruit, spice and Spanish cedar. The finish is smooth and silky. This vintage of Pio Cesare's single-vineyard Barolo is better consumed in the near and medium term. The wine is aged in botte grande and barrique. Some 10,000 bottles were made.
