Scented, correct, smoky. Not flashy, despite the use of French barriques. Dry finish, quite enough fruit and a fine introductory object lesson in the charms of mature Barolo. Good value. (JR)

La Morra, barrique. Medium garnet. Spicy oak overlays sweet red fruit but is pretty dominant at the moment. As it opens up, there’s some very nice delicate red fruit and fragrance that bodes well. Fine, dense tannins, with finesse and length and depth. Needs lots of time. (JH)

The Revello cellars are located in Annunziata just under La Morra. Carlo's beacon for exceptional Barolo is Elio Altare, so their wines tend to have upfront, fleshy fruit. The wines are aged in casks and smaller French oak barrels, some of which are new . A bend from several vineyards (total 3ha); aged 100% in French barriques, 20% new, for 24 months. Slightly darker than the Cavallotto but wider rim. More pronounced fruit aromas, sweetly spiced red fruit and sweet oak notes, then rich and firm and so juicy on the palate and finishes warm and spiced. (JH) £220.00 ib Goedhuis

The 2004 Barolo is a stylish, elegant offering with perfumed red fruit and an accessible, feminine personality. It offers notable freshness and sweet tannins in a restrained style. In recent vintages this has been a very reliable entry-level bottling.
