Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Aug 2021

The 2017 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is very odd and reductive on the nose; there’s a lot of struck match here. The palate is bitter on the entry and very reduced, and that struck match note dominates the finish, instead of the terroir or fruit. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2017 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru has a crisp and taut, slightly austere bouquet that takes time to get warmed up in the glass, retaining those classic flint and smoke aromas. The palate is fresh and vibrant with a fine bead of acidity, touches of orange rind and dried apricot with a gentle, caressing finish that seems to just "wash over" the senses.
