Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Corton Pougets Domaine des Heritiers 2011 from Louis Jadot has a tightly wound, slightly oaky, modern-style bouquet with plenty of red cherry fruit intermingling with wild strawberry and redcurrant aromas. It lacks a little Corton typicité, seems just a tad generic at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with quite fleshy, supple tannins that are neatly entwined with the acidity. The problem is that the finish feels a little monotone compared to the entry and so one is not left with as positive impression as it could. Perhaps a year will benefit this Corton?

Bright classic red pinot color. Lovely perfume to the aromas of sour red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, spices and soil. Then tightly wound and penetrating, even youthfully austere, with firm acidity and saline minerality giving the wine a mouthwatering quality but keeping the fruit under wraps today. Finishes with a firm tannic spine, insinuating red fruit and floral persistence and excellent grip. This needs several years of cellaring to unwind but has terrific potential.
Medium red. Aromatic nose offers iron, dried flowers and spicy oak. Sappy and dense yet light on its feet, showing exhilarating minerality. A distinctly pretty version of Corton, almost in the style of a Corton-Charlemagne. Most intriguing today on the dry, long, very suave finish, which coats the teeth with dusty tannins and perfumes the mouth with minerals and white pepper. All in subtlety.

Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent négociant house in Burgundy. It has managed to straddle both the entry-level and fine wine market, while retaining respect in both.
