The 2014 Le Sol has a peat character both on the nose and in the mouth. The wine is brooding and dense and savory, with venison and cumin, clove, fennel seeds, and black sesame. An interesting wine, it is one that really has a peated finish shown in a little wisp of bonfire through the finish. 14.2% alcohol, sealed under cork.

18 months in French oak (35% new). Wildly more expensive than any other Gimblett Gravels producer, Craggy Range keeps pushing the envelope. Ridiculously heavy bottle – perhaps that's why it's so expensive? Much darker crimson than its peers. Smells a bit more of winemaking than vineyard. Savoury and ambitious. Distinctly New World rather than a French knock off. There is definitely an attempt to tame the fruit. But it's all a bit forced. Made for the future and it may well all fall into place. But I would wait quite a while before opening it. (JR)
