The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is another of the highlights chez Bouchard this year, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, spices and licorice. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and lavish, with an ample core of succulent fruit and an open-knit and giving profile. It will be hard to resist in its youth.

A mildly flat nose speaks of plum liqueur, various dark berries, warm earth and a much more discreet hint of wood. The very rich and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors are also rich, velvety and quite seductive while the freshness picks up and particularly so on the vibrant, suave and sneaky long finish. Once again, my range implicitly assumes that the slightly flat nose will not be a future problem as the wine ages.

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, which is not domaine but is farmed by the Bouchard team themselves, has a fresh, vibrant bouquet that is actually classier than the domaine’s own Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied with fine balance, slightly grainy tannin, good mineralité and satisfying precision toward the sustained finish. Very fine.

A very complex nose with a swathe of violets, dark toasted spices, black cherries and earthy notes with a graphite edge, all equating to a brashly appealing impression. The palate has a long, lithe and juicy edge with succulent, deep-set, fresh and fleshy fruit. Very seductive already. Purchased, together with with Clos de Bèze, from a grower. Try from 2022.
