Tasting notes
A transparent but deep crimson color, the 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva displays a ripe profile in its aromas of baked red plum, sweet baking spices, a hint of vanilla, and dried flowers. Full-bodied, it expands on the palate with ripe tannins and rounded fruit, although it’s not heavy and has more modest acidity. SHowing more tertiary notes of mushroom-covered earth and a relatively long finish, I would prefer to enjoy this ripe Riserva over the next few years, but it should mature gracefully over the next 10-12. The Stucchi Prinetti family has helmed this Monti del Chianti-based estate since 1846, with the sixth generation being led by Emanuela, Paolo, and Roberto Stucchi Prinetti. Their Montebello embraces the indigenous ancient varietals of Mammolo, Ciliegiolo, Pugnitello, Colorino, Sanforte, MalvasiaNera, Canaiolo, and FogliaTonda. I was able to taste the wines for this report with Roberto Stucchi Prinetti in New York as well as at the offices of the Consorzio.

The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva is floral, ethereal and nicely lifted. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and leather give the 2018 terrific aromatic presence. This mid-weight Riserva drinks well now, but also has enough energy to develop positively in bottle for at least a handful of years.
