Aromas of sweet cherries, blackberries, pencil shavings and barnyard introduce the 2022 Baron de Brane, a medium-bodied, sweet and somewhat carnal red that will appeal to readers with old-fashioned tastes.
The 2022 Baron de Brane aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 15% new. It has a pretty bouquet, featuring light blackcurrant and cedar scents. It’s understated at first but with fine delineation and gathering pace with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen line of acidity, touches of black pepper and saline/black olive compote notes towards the finish. This should drink after just a few months bottling and give 12 to 15 years' of drinking pleasure.
65% Merlot. Cask sample. Henri Lurton’s son whom I last saw in Baja escorted me to the tasting room here! Gentle and easy. Quite soft and satiny. Selection of blocks around the park. Pretty wine for early drinking. Quite long and lots of fun. NB drink dates. (JR)

Château Brane-Cantenac has been a consistent performer in the Margaux wine appellation since Henri Lurton took over the property, but thanks to replanting and investment in the last decade, quality has seen another sharp upswing.
