The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is more opulent on the nose compared to the Clos de Verseuil with candied orange peel infusing the vivid red cherries and crushed strawberries. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry, quite a bold Caillerets with a "thickly-textured" grippy finish. Maybe the Clos de Verseuil possesses more finesse and exhibits greater terroir expression.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets reveals scents of cassis, plums, dark chocolate and spices framed by a generous application of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with tangy acids and an abundance of chalky tannin underpinned its deep core of fruit, this is unusually structured this year and will require patience.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was picked at 20hl/ha due to widespread millerandage that produced tiny berries, according to Clerget. This is completely de-stemmed and raised in 30% new oak. It has a vigorous, intense bouquet of red and black fruit mixed with loamy aromas and undergrowth, a touch of incense emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a superb bead of acidity. Very succulent and voluminous in the mouth, perhaps just needing a little more bite and definition on the finish, but certainly very persistent. Cellar this for five years if you can and it should turn into quite a substantial Volnay.
