Tasting notes
A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec, the 2022 Clos René is forward, ripe, and textured, offering up ample red and black fruits, chocolate, loamy earth, and spice-driven aromatics. Supple and approachable, as well as medium-bodied on the palate, it has a slightly rustic feel but offers plenty of charm. Aged in oak barrels, this should drink well for 12-15 years.

The 2022 Clos René has an intense bouquet with wild strawberry and raspberry scents, perhaps not quite delivering the complexity that I was hoping for in the context of some great vintages in recent years. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet opening featuring red fruit laced with candied orange peel. It feels a little Mediterranean toward the finish, missing a bit of Pomerol DNA at the moment.
The Malbec adds a deeply spiced note and this is very much black cherry, black pepper, grilled tar, skirting on the edge of volatile. 20% new oak for ageing.
Old school Pomerol, as is often the case with Clos Rene, this is extremely sweet on the palate, with black cherry jam character and a heady aromatic character of incense and sandalwood. This is not a winemaker that I would expect to change his method of harvesting according to vintage conditions. The blend given is as planted in the vineyard, not specific to the vintage.
