Tasting notes
The 2014 Sérilhan has a feistier and more exuberant bouquet compared directly with the 2015. This sprints out of the glass with vivacious red cherries, blackcurrants and rose petals, orange rind and dark chocolate, hot on its tail. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy like the 2016 although this preceding vintage has more grip and backbone on the finish and will have greater longevity, maybe 20 years no problem. This is an excellent Saint-Estèphe that is well worth seeking out. An outstanding Cru Bourgeois.

The 2014 Sérilhan has a modern sheen on the nose -- some quality new oak here but it is nicely integrated with the sweet black cherry and raspberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, clean and pure, almost Burgundy-like in terms of its silky texture with a plush but poised landing on the finish. Bravo -- what a gorgeous Sérilhan you are! Tasted September 2016.
61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 16 months in barriques, 35% new. Very dark crimson. Fragrant with some red as well as the more typical black fruit – very inviting. Some oak sweetness too. On the palate, ripe and sweet with flavours of red plum. Unusual given the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Juicy, fresh and lively. Distinctive in this line up of St-Estèphes. Deep and persistent but lively with a firm but not aggressive tannic grip. (JH)
Hubert de Boüard is consultant here. New technique, also used by de Boüard elsewhere – less than 1% of the stems are dried and powdered and added back to the wines after malo. 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc. Deep cherry red. Rich in ripe cassis. Ripe but freshly fragrant. Spicy too. Firm, dense tannins but no indication of stemminess. Quite linear at the moment but very long. Pretty high acidity, tannins are definite but not intrusive. A way to go. (JH)
