Another head-turner is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape la Folie, which is an 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre brought up mostly in foudre, with a small amount in demi-muids. This cuvee was almost overtly modern on release, yet it has evolved into a beautiful Chateauneuf du Pape that has serious levels of concentrated fruit, full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and a huge perfume of caramelized black cherries, smoked herbs, licorice and leather. Like the other wines here, it’s impeccably balanced and will keep for at least another decade.

Showing similarly to a previous bottle, the 2007 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Folie (80% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre aged all in new foudre) displays loads of spice, garrigue, licorice, and perfumed red fruits, as well as a medium to full-bodied, fleshy, upfront profile. While hedonistic, this also shows solid focus, notable balance, and enough structure to allow it to age gracefully for a decade or longer.

A new special cuvee from a single plot on the Mont Redon plateau, the 2007 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Folie is an old vine blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre that’s aged all in new oak foudres. It is spicy, upfront, and perfumed on the nose, possessing loads of sweet red fruits, licorice, flowers, ginger bread, and dried garrigue like aromas that pick up steam with air. Medium to full bodied on the palate with a rounded, open character, sweet fruit, and a lush, long finish, this hedonistically styled beauty is delicious now, but should be even better in a year or two.

Glass-staining ruby. Potent dark berries and cherry skin on the nose, with hints of licorice, vanillin oak and candied violet adding complexity. Rich blackcurrant and mulberry flavors show a distinctly sweet character and are complemented by vanilla and cola qualities. The oakiness fades into the lush fruit on the long, sappy, alluringly sweet finish.
