Vinfolio, Apr 2023

An extension of the Mouton terroir, serious investment at this estate has seen quality soar over recent vintages. Dark and broody, it’s aristocratic in its linear structure – perhaps even a little stern at this early stage, not revealing much. The nose is savoury and spicy with dark chocolate tones, yet there are also hints of blackcurrant leaf, raspberry coulis and florals. There’s a pleasing crunch of fruit, framed by firm tannins, leading on to a pleasing, earthy, mineral finish. There’s a quiet depth to this vertical wine that is impressive. Aged in 50% new oak, 14.5% alcohol. Blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

The 2022 d'Armailhac is definitely a step up: fresh blackberry and blueberry fruit, just a hint of cassis, wonderful delineation and seamlessly integrated new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, smooth and sensual, pitch-perfect acidity and a creamy finish that just lures you in. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Aromas of cherries, blackberries, pencil shavings and creamy new oak introduce the 2022 d'Armailhac , a medium to full-bodied, sweet and dense wine that's rich and succulent, with a generous core of sun-kissed fruit, ripe tannins and an expansive finish.

Ch. d’Armailhac is a Pauillac Fifth Growth owned by the Rothschilds, who also own Ch. Mouton Rothschild. Lavished with the same attention to detail and having benefitted from extensive investment in recent years, this estate can offer brilliant value in comparison to its First Growth sibling.
