Yields were down on 2021 for Clos du Marquis in 2022, with 34hl/ha. Aged in 53% new oak, it speaks to its high proportion of Merlot – ripe, rich and plummy. But this generous fruit is balanced by spicy perfume, great freshness and a fine but firm tannic grip that adds texture. A lifted, dark-fruited scent fills the finish. Blend: 45.5% Merlot, 44.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc

The 2022 Clos du Marquis has commendable fruit concentration: blackberry, bilberry and light estuarine scents, well defined with the oak neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, pliant tannins. Fine acidity, clean and crisp towards the finish. There is just a hint of warm alcohol on the aftertaste, but otherwise this will do nicely. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.
The 2022 Clos du Marquis is lovely, unwinding in the glass with notes of inky berries and cherries mingled with attractive floral nuances of rose petals and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and suave, it's layered and concentrated, with a dense and lively core of fruit, beautiful purity and a long, penetrating finish.
The 2022 Clos Du Marquis is rich, concentrated, and serious, with cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and chalky minerality developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied and incredibly pure on the palate, it has bright acidity, building tannins, and a great finish. This structured yet elegant Saint-Julien should evolve well for at least 2-3 decades if well stored.
