The 2014 Champagne Premier Cru Mareuil-Sur-Ay Extra Brut is only released in select years and comes from three Pinot Noir plots from the home village. It pours a deep straw hue and displays a rounded profile with lush aromas of fresh plum, a hint of blue fruit, shortbread cookie, red apple, and incense. Full-bodied, it floats across the palate with a rounded mouthfeel and a long finish. A very pretty style, it’s delicious now but has a long drink window over the coming decades. 3,210 bottles were produced. Disgorged June 2022, with 4.5 grams per liter dosage.

The 2014 Extra-Brut Mareuil-sur-Aÿ is bright and focused in the glass. Chalk-infused red fruit, white pepper, smoke and dried herbs are all nicely delineated. This is an especially linear style, with good persistence but less intensity on the mid-palate. It will appeal most to readers who enjoy nervy Champagnes. The 2014 is 100% Pinot Noir done entirely in barrel with no malolactic fermentation. I would give this a few years in bottle to see if a bit more mid-palate depth develops. Disgorged: June 2022.

Disgorged in June 2023, the 2014 Mareuil-sur-Aÿ Extra Brut is a 100% Pinot Noir sourced from vines planted in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and vinified in barrels. It evokes notes of a deep, complex, intense bouquet with aromas of nuts, exotic fruits, mango, pastry, ripe orchard fruits and honeycomb. Medium to full-bodied, it’s broad, vinous and fleshy, concluding with an intensely mineral, saline finish.
