The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, which predates their biodynamic regime, includes 50% whole bunches. It has a light crushed strawberry nose that oddly makes me think of the Cape. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied licorice note, nicely balanced, though it comes across as a little simple on the finish. Enjoyable, even if you get the impression it isn't going to go anywhere.

Light to mid cherry red. Dark-red fruit and a hint of something more rocky/graphite, peppery too. That same dark-red fruit on the palate, reminds me of a granite-influenced beaujolais cru, strangely. Dry, fine tannins. Fresh and still very youthful. (JH)

Mid to deep cherry red. Aroma of sweet red damsons and a touch of cedar. Not as sweet on the palate, a little spicy. Dry, tight, modest but harmonious. (JH)

From 80-year-old vines and matured with around 35% whole-bunch fruit, the 2013 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has an attractive raspberry and dark cherry bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannins and commendable density, harmonious in the mouth with an elegant finish. For me, this works much better than the Clos Village ’13.
