Aromas of plums, rich forest floor, warm spices and smoked meats introduce the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Écu Monopole, a medium-bodied, bright and elegant wine that's satiny and melting, with lively acids and fine, powdery tannins. This is as fine a rendition of the Clos de l'Écu as I can remember tasting.

The 2019 Beaune Clos de l’Ecu 1er Cru, raised in 30% new oak for 24 months, was quite backward on the nose, showing tightly wound, slightly tertiary red berry fruit. The palate has good structure, quite savory in style, and a lightly spiced finish. This is a fine Beaune to enjoy over the next 8–10 years.
