Pietroso's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino opens to smoky tones of ash and brimstone followed by dried cherry and plum. The alcohol is listed at 14% and you feel the power immediately. Within a few minutes in the glass, it begins to offers more fruit tones although they are definitely on the dry side, including prune, fig and cassis. The medium-bodied mouthfeel offers compact structure and polished tannins. This is a good effort but not an overwhelming one.

Healthy, concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Tea leaves and dried fruit and a hint of oak. Supple and sweet with good acidity and firm, grainy tannins. Perhaps just a little too popular for my taste. (WS)
