Score 86/100 · Drink 2017-2022, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Jun 2017

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Certan de May was rather disappointing on the nose compared to previous showings, seeming to have lost some of its fruitiness, replaced by tertiary, mushroom-like aromas that lack some delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, moderate acidity, quite masculine with some dryness creeping in on the attenuated finish. I would consume bottles in the near future. Tasted February 2017.

Distinctive aroma that is hard to place. A hint of Bovril (meat extract) but also very marked by a leafy/stemmy herbaceous aroma. Herbaceous and dry on the palate, with paper-like finesse to the tannins but just not quite enough fruit to fill out the middle. Slighty sour on the finish. (JH)

Medium red-ruby. Perfumed, complex nose melds redcurrant, tobacco, mocha, cocoa powder and licorice. Broad, sweet and perfumed, with lovely floral lift and energy to the flavors of blueberry, hot rocks and violet. Finishes with a firm tannic spine that calls for several years of cellaring.

Deep ruby. Complex, showy nose offers cassis, licorice, minerals and fresh herbs. Sweet, suave and concentrated, with good breadth and moderate nuance to the dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors. No shortage of stuffing here but a bit clenched today on the back end. (A second sample finished with finer-grained tannins and more obvious aromatic persistence.)
