Fleshy, ripe and round with a profile of anise, black cherry, oak and cocoa, this wine is forward, smooth and delivers fresh black cherries in the finish. 100% Merlot, this vintage comes from vines that average 50 years of age -- quite amazing when you consider how little the estate charges for the wine. 89-91
La Fleur Morange's 2014 Mathilde, 100% Merlot, is supple, open and expressive, with attractive red cherry and plum flavors buffered by a sheen of new oak. The mid-weight, fleshy style is best suited to near-term drinking.
The Mathilde 2014 has a fragrant mulberry and blackberry nose that is very open and generous, yet maintains respectable definition. The palate is medium-bodied, soft and supple in the mouth, a light citrus touch joining the chocolate-tinged black fruit on the easygoing finish. This is a sensual Saint Emilion, albeit one that does not possess the same level of complexity as the top-performing wines of the appéllation.
