Dark red with ruby highlights. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol are leavened by a distinct medicinal reserve. Sweet and thick but penetrating as well, with the black fruit flavors saturating the mouth. Finishes broad, gripping and long, with sweet tannins coating the teeth. I give this the edge over the young 2014 Clos Vougeot, but between the two vintages of Charmes-Chambertin I prefer the '14.

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Remoissenet has just a touch of brettanomyces on the nose, but nothing too bad, and you can discern brambly red berry fruit laced with cold black tea underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin. The oak comes across a little strongly, but there is sufficient fruit underneath, with a dash of white pepper and sage on the aftertaste. Fine.

Tasted blind. NHB (naughty heavy bottle). Mid blueish crimson. Well integrated, medium-intensity nose. Rather brash cherry cordial nose and some very aggressive tannins. Brash sums it up. Sweet, then oaky. (JR)

The 2013 Clos de Vougeot exudes energy and intensity. A spine of firm tannin provide the backbone for a gorgeous, super-expressive Clos Vouget. Hints of orange peel, spice, crushed flowers and raspberry meld together in a racy Burgundy graced with impeccable overall balance. There is a lot to like, and a lot to look forward to. The interplay of salinity and richness is hugely appealing.
