The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot was one of the more reserved wines in the cellar when I tasted it, unwinding with notes of pear, peach, white flowers, mint and petrol. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and precise, but needs time to fill out. Of course, that sense of reserve at this early stage is full of promise for the future.

Morgeot is a huge premier cru, comprising 20% of the appellation but with lots of sub-appellations. Moreau has two parcels, in Les Fairendes and La Cardeuse. Morgeot is typically dense and structured but you have to be really careful not to lose character in favour of weight. Don’t go too far, says Moreau. 25% new oak. Tank sample, still on lees. Less open on the nose than the Maltroie but rich and ripe on the palate, such depth of ripe citrus going into yellow plum. Still fresh but broad and spicy too. Nutty and chewy, a big wine though not heavy. He says it is a wine that needs time like a baby Bâtard, dense and compact. Compact is the word. Needs time to be drawn out. Long, spicy finish. (JH)
