Tasting notes
Not yet bottled, the 2015 Gigondas offers the classic, wild perfume of the estate with notes of basil, leafy herbs, plums, and pepper all soaring from the glass. Like the 2016, it’s a ripe, rounded, beautifully concentrated effort that’s going to keep for a decade. Unquestionably one of my favorite estate in Gigondas is that of the Faraud sister: Delphine, Cendrine, and Roseline. These aren’t for those craving clean, pure fruit-forward profiles and they always have a certainly feral, wild quality (they’re certainly easy to spot in a blind tasting) and are old-school all the way. They make a single Gigondas which is always a rough blend of 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre, not destemmed, and aged all in very old foudres. I love the wines.

The tank sample of Domaine du Cayron's 2015 Gigondas looks to be excellent. Not only does it show the vintage's ripe fruit in the form of red plums, stone fruit and supple tannins, it still retains fine details like wisps of fennel, cracked pepper and a long, licorice-tinged finish. Drink this slightly warm, full-bodied wine from release through 2025.
Dark ruby. Potent mineral- and smoke-accented cherry, boysenberry and garrigue scents pick up a sexy incense nuance as the wine opens up. Sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors and a hint of smoked meat. Concentrated yet light on its feet, playing power off finesse with a smooth hand and finishing impressively long, sweet and youthfully tannic. I'd happily lose this wine in the cellar for a while.
70% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 14% Syrah, 1% Mourvèdre. 100% destemmed. Matured for 6-12 months in old oak foudres. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Bright crimson. Sweet and cheesy and rather as though the fruit has been boiled out. Rather ungainly finish. (JR)
