From a parcel acquired in 2000, but only bottled as a single-vineyard wine from 2007 on. Still quite youthful ruby. Sweet and opulent on the nose yet classic Nebbiolo. Quite full-on on the palate for Monvigliero , with a complex minerally streak coming through. Great concentration of fruit, yet still wonderfully compact and taut. Really animating, juicy supple finish. Delicious. (WS)

Good full, dark red. Deep, pure, brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice and leather, plus a hint of oak spices. Offers lovely aromatic lift but comes across as tightly wound, even youthfully imploded, today, showing less texture than the more open-knit Ambrogio. Best on the finish now, showing talc-like tannins and classic structure. This very firmly built wine, from the northernmost vineyard in the Barolo zone, needs a good five or six years to expand in bottle.

Scavino's 2007 Barolo Monvigliero is by far the most concentrated, rich and structured Barolo I have ever tasted from this historic vineyard in Verduno. Firm yet polished tannins frame an explosive core of dark red fruit, rose petals, mint and spices. The Monvigliero shows marvelous focus and intensity. It is one of the most tannic wines of the vintage, but also one of the most promising. Sweet, floral notes leave a lasting impression on the vivid, textured finish. Scavino's Monvigliero will be a fascinating wine to follow, although I fear it may require significant patience. This is a marvelous debut vintage.

This is a stunning set of new wines from Enrico Scavino. Over the last few years Scavino has begun to incorporate lots vinified in specially designed tanks that allow for greater contact with the skins. This year Scavino has a new Barolo from a recently acquired parcel in Monvigliero, the most historic vineyard in the village of Verduno. Scavino had incorporated the fruit from this parcel into the straight Barolo when he had access to the vineyard under lease, but now that he has full control of the vineyard he has decided to bottle the wine separately. The first vintage, the 2007, is a stunner. Importer: Banville & Jones Wine Merchants, New York, NY; tel. (204) 294-4899
