The 2017 Volnay Les Pitures 1er Cru has the strictest bouquet amongst Lafarge’s Volnays, tightly coiled but very focused. The palate is structured and grippy, with great depth and mineralité , full of energy but clearly long-term, Given the energy it will be bottled entirely in magnums, which has been the case since the 2015 vintage. This is a vin de garde .

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures will be bottled exclusively in magnum, Frédéric Lafarge observing that it's a wine that gains enormously with bottle age. Exhibiting aromas of wild berries, candied peel and raw cocoa, it's medium-bodied, layered and tensile, with good concentration and fine, chalky structure to burn, concluding with a beautifully defined finish.
Barrel sample of final blend. Above Frémiets, close to Pommard. Started in 2015; before it was an ingredient in Volnay premier cru. Just one pièce in 2016, three in 2017. Pebbly clay. 15% new oak. Always in magnum because it ages so well. Lightish cherry red. Delicate, red fruit and mineral nose. The fresh almost herbal note that I associate with stems but it’s fully ripe and there were no stems! Power and salty-sour intensity on the palate here. All in embryo, fine but driving tannins with the fruit not yet expressed. Obvious potential for long life. Savoury finish. (JH)
