Good medium red. Smells riper on the nose than the Griottes, offering richer scents of musky strawberry and cherry. Then sweeter and weightier in the mouth too, if a bit literal and solid following the racy Griottes. Still, with its sweet red fruits, fine-grained texture and ripe tannins, this wine is still in a rather feminine style. Laurent Lignier notes that the family's vines are situated higher on the hillside--in other words, not planted on heavier soil next to the Route Nationale.

Moderately saturated bright red. Aromas of red cherry, raspberry and rose petal accented by spices and herbs. Displays urgent red fruits on entry, with notes of flowers and leather emerging with air. This dense wine conveys a strong impression of acidity and excellent energy but shows a touch of peppery, herbal dryness on the back end. Not quite as fine as the Combottes and certainly less showy today.

The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, from the southern part of the Mazoyères sector, has a fragrant bouquet with scents of raspberry coulis and blueberry, though these recede as the wine opens in the glass to reveal more flinty, cold stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin matched by a keen line of acidity. It is a linear and poised Charmes-Chambertin, just a touch of spice coming towards the finish that feels long and tender. Such a beautiful wine, but it will need 5-6 years to really show what it can do.
