The 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is the most complete of the Barolos in this range. Suave and polished (for a young Barolo), the 2015 offers a good bit of early appeal, as all these wines do. Sweet tobacco, dried cherry, mint, crushed flowers and orange zest add layers of nuance to this pretty, expressive Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria.

Monvigliero in the Verduno township is quickly becoming one of the most celebrated and talked about crus in Barolo. The Fratelli Alessandria estate was among the first to understand its potential, and indeed, this wine was first released in 1978. Fast forward to today and you will find that the 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is an absolutely classic interpretation that stays faithful to past incarnations. The wine offers pretty berry aromas intermingled with spice, licorice and crushed stone. A floral aroma of red rose also appears. The tannins are solid and will require extra years of bottle aging.

Verduno. Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Sweet and rich cherry-compote nose with savoury spicy notes hovering over it. Pretty combination of juicy acidity, ripe fruit and polished tannins. Very long and with great focus. (WS)

Pale-medium garnet. Primary, blackberry fruit intensity with nutty oak breadth and some spice tones. High, fine tannins in a classic Barolo style. Rich, blackberry and black-cherry palate fruit, with chocolate oak notes. Just a touch of warmth and in need of a bit more freshness, but pretty good stuff. (TJ)
