Tasting notes
Notes of red berries, cherries and kirsch preface the ethereal, fine-boned 2019 Santenay 1er Cru Charmes, a medium to full-bodied, bright and elegant red that derives from a site that typically retains elevated acids even at advanced degrees of maturity. It's really a terroir adapted to white grapes, opine the Bachelet brothers, but its distinctive profile when planted to red is certainly a welcome addition to Burgundy's diversity.

The 2019 Santenay Les Charmes-Dessus offers brambly red berry fruit mixed with rose petal and light tea leaf aromas. There is not a stem in the cuvée this year so it is less peppery/earthy than the 2018. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit mixed with graphite and citrus fruit, hints of blood orange towards the tangy finish. So much energy is coiled up in this Santenay! Excellent.
