Score 92/100 · Drink 2024-2040, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021

The 2016 Barolo has more brooding aromatics compared to the Barbaresco, with tar, pine, and dried red plum. There is tart red fruit up front on the palate and sour cherry, tea leaf, orange zest, and dusty tannins on the back end. Drink 2024-2040. The historic cellars of Marchesi di Barolo are located in the town of Barolo. With its origins in 1806, the Marquis of Barolo married Juliette Colbert de Maulevrier, a French noblewoman who went on to establish and build the cellar. The estate controls approximately 200 hectares within the Barolo and Barbaresco regions. Anna and Ernesto Abbona, along with their children Valentina and Davide, oversee the estate today.

The 2016 Barolo Tradizione is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the flavors remain vibrant. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit and gently spiced notes all meld together in this gracious, effortless Barolo from the Marchesi.

This wine is considered the "della Tradizione" bottling, although it doesn't say so explicitly on the bottle. Instead, the Marchesi di Barolo 2016 Barolo Tradizione is noted for its retro label design that does indeed evoke local Barolo traditions. Made with classic lines, the wine pours forth with a mid-weight approach and vivid ruby highlights. The bouquet is loose and broad, with less focus compared to the others in this group. There is some green astringency as well. Given the excellence of the vintage, I would expect more from this wine. A whopping 130,000 bottles were produced.

Transparent and perfumed with cherry, ripe-strawberry and floral character. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a beautiful, bright finish. Hints of hazelnuts at the end. Drinkable now, but better in a couple of years.
