The 2021 Mabalel comes from Elandskloof, fully de-stemmed and aged for 10 months in barrel. Red cherries and strawberry infused; light loamy scents unfold on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit on the entry, fine acidity and structure with a dash of black pepper furnishing the finish. Very fine.

Called after a poem. This was the first non-drought vintage for several years so it was later picked. At all of 700 m. Planted in 2009. All grapes were destemmed. All barrique-aged, 20% new. Clones 115, 777, 667. Mid garnet. Quite a ripe nose. Clean and fresh but this still seems to be work in progress. (JR)
