Vinfolio, Nov 2022

This was a real standout in our tasting. This east-facing plot is separated from their Corton-Charlemagne site by a three-metre stone wall. It’s in the highest part of the vineyard, at around 250 metres’ altitude, with 60-70cm of iron-rich red clay over limestone bedrock, with the latte bringing particular elegance to the wine. The first impression is one of profundity – a dark, deep wine that also manages to have floral brightness and precision. There’s concentration and clarity, with mouth-watering freshness and bright dark cherry fruit. Pure and long, with mineral complexity, this is so open and approachable yet layered and expressive. Superb.

The 2021 Le Corton Grand Cru is a little fuller and fleshier on the nose with ripe strawberry and red cherry scents, quite generous in style. Some stem addition becomes apparent with aeration, a little damp loam and bell pepper underlying the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins. Fresh and linear, though it just lacks a bit of finesse and charm towards the robust and decidedly peppery finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Le Corton Grand Cru, matured with 50% stems, has a delightful nose with cracked black pepper and thyme infusing the dark berry fruit, a little broody in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a little conservative perhaps, straightlaced with brown spices towards the finish. Fine, yet missing a bit of pizzazz.
