With a dense, concentrated nose of bright, ripe stone fruit, Prager's 2021 Ried Achleiten Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Stockkultur starts off restrained in the Zalto Universal glass. Opulent, dense and extracted on the palate, with richness, power and substance, this is a rich but firmly structured, salty and persistent GV that needs plenty of time in the (big) glass, which I unfortunately didn't have here at the castle above the Danube River. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2022.

Full bottle just 1,268 g. Prager’s ‘Stockkultur’ is situated at the very top of the legendary Achleiten vineyard in Weissenkirchen; wines from there show an inimitable mineral character. Dry-stone walls mounting the steep slopes with their silicate-rich soil date back to the 12th century. Toni Bodenstein’s vines in this site, planted in 1930, are trained to stakes, which requires more handwork but provides protective conditions for the grapes. Nose is much more discreet than that of the regular Achleiten bottling. This is still a baby! An embryonic wine that has so much tightly furled within it but is not giving much at this stage. The acidity seems much more marked than on the other Prager 2021 Smaragd bottlings. This will surely be a great wine eventually but for the moment, don't think of opening it! (JR)
