Still drinking well, the structured, taut 2021 Illumination features initial scents of crushed stone and pencil shavings on the nose, followed by notes of underripe pineapple and fresh lime. While still medium to full-bodied, it comes across as more linear in feel than the 2022 version tasted alongside, with a long, mouthwatering finish.

50% Sauvignon Blanc Musqué, 30% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon. 60% Napa County, 40% Sonoma County. ‘The 2021 growing season was one of both extreme conditions and excellent quality. A second year of low rainfall resulted in drought conditions that were mitigated by a mild spring and summer. The vines responded with smaller canopies and lower yields, while the temperate season allowed the fruit to slowly ripen and develop concentration of flavour while retaining bright acidity. Harvest began on 18 August with perfectly balanced Sauvignon Blanc Musqué and concluded on 14 September with rich and textured Sémillon.’ Mostly estate fruit and also from American Canyon (Napa County) and Bennett Valley (Sonoma), growers they have worked with for some time. 2006 was the first vintage and is currently drinking well. Very lively and fresh. A little fresher than a Pessac-Léognan. Creamy with lots of acidity. Long. (JR)

Honeysuckle and sliced melon on both the nose and palate, together with light lime and a hint of white peach. It’s full and layered with density and focus. Flint and crushed stone. It’s long and flavorful. Granita. Creamy texture. Barrel-fermented with some eggs. Almost all old wood. 20% semillon. Unique white for name. Drink or hold.

Powerful, nuanced and well spiced, this has juicy, lightly toasted stone fruits, sculpted acidities and dried herbs. Good quality. Fruit sourced from 60% Napa County, 40% Sonoma County. Winemaker Rebekah Wineberg, consultant Michel Rolland.
