Dark ruby. Perfumed aromas of ripe red berries, cola and lavender, with a mineral element lurking in the background. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering sweet raspberry and spicecake flavors that deepen with air. Finishes seamless and spicy, with even tannins.

A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre and Cinsault, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape is a classic effort that does everything right. Garrigue, dry aged beef, blackberry and kirsch are all present in this medium to full-bodied, ripe, layered and character-filled effort. Possessing excellent concentration, sweet tannin and low acidity, it’s a rock-star base cuvee to drink over the coming decade.

Deep ruby. Pungent aromas of cherry compote, pipe tobacco and garrigue, with a smoky overtone. Lush and expansive on the palate, offering pliant dark berry flavors, a hint of anise and good energy. Supple tannins add shape and grip to the clinging, fruit-driven finish.

Vineyard soil: galets, sand. Lieu-dit: Bédines, Pignan, Guiguasse, Valori, Chapouin. Grape varieties: 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault. Some slightly overripe notes on the nose but lots of (carbon dioxide?) energy on the palate. Strawberry fruit. Round and easy. A hint of rose petals. Not to be overlooked! (JR)
