Alvina Pernot is a winemaker with some legacy. This rising star of Puligny-Montrachet works at the family domaine – Paul Pernot – and started her own operation in 2018. This village Puligny-Montrachet – from just her fourth vintage – comes from a plot that is an extension of her garden. It’s singing in 2021, a vintage that produced some brilliant whites. Aged only in old and larger oak, it’s precise, pure and long – with a limey intensity on the palate. There’s a tightly wound core of vibrant fruit, with bright, mouth-watering acidity, softened by a chalky, flinty mineral edge. Very classical in proportion, this is elegant, excellent village Chardonnay. Alas, just five barrels were made, half of the normal production, thanks to 2021’s tricky conditions.

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Clos des Noyers Bret has a bit more horsepower compared to François Carillon's Champgains: scents of orchard fruit and grass clippings with a dab of lemon thyme emerging with aeration. Fine delineation. The palate is quite dense for a Puligny, weighty with what feels like more extract. Fine texture with hints of citronella and lime towards the finish. Savour this over the next decade. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Noyers Brets wafts from the glass with aromas of white peach, pear, spring blossoms and bread dough. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and lively, with bright acids and a saline finish, it's an elegant, textural wine that already offers demonstrative drinking.
