Another textbook representation of an appellation, the inky-hued 2019 Hermitage boasts a killer bouquet of red and black currants, burning embers, bacon fat, new leather, and spiced meat to go with a concentrated, full-bodied, powerful style on the palate. It has some upfront charm given its wealth of fruit yet has building tannins. Either try a bottle in its youth or give it a decade in the cellar.

80% Marsanne, from vines aged 50+ years, and 20% Roussanne, from vines aged 40+ years, from Pierrelles, Beaume, Murets and La Croix. Aged for 12 months in barrels and a further 12 months in Stockinger foudre. We are instructed to decant two hours before serving. Cask sample. Greenish gold and really pretty sweet and round at this stage. It may well shed its puppy fat but for the moment it is more honey than granite-inspired tension. I'd advise waiting quite a while to see what develops in bottle. (JR)
