Tasting notes
Julian Haart aims for the highest possible wine quality for his single-vineyard crus. The medium-dry 2013 Piesporter Riesling is a 100% Goldtröpfchen selection from younger vines or lesser parcels, and thus does not mention the prestigious site on the label. Declassified as a village wine and macerated for six hours, the Piesporter fermented 50:50 in 10,00-liter stainless steel and 1,000-liter fuder and ended up with 11% alcohol and 13 grams of residual sugar. Flinty and very ripe stone fruit aromas on the nose lead to a quite sweet, intense and finally powerful Riesling with high extracts, ripe fruit flavors and a nice salty/slate finish.

Less immediate fruit impact than on the Mosel Riesling but it opens out to a citrus freshness mixed with slate – almost smoky. Juicy ripe lemon fruit – pure and clear as a bell yet still has that almost savoury slate note on the finish. Long, too. VGV (JH)
