Smoky red and blue fruits, graphite, burning embers, and a kiss of leather all emerge from the 2021 Château Feytit-Clinet, another ripe, broad, layered effort from Jeremy Chasseuil. Medium-bodied, textured, and beautifully balanced, with plenty of mid-palate depth, it has ripe tannins and outstanding length. Give this terrific 2021 2-4 years, and it will evolve nicely over the following decade.

The 2021 Feytit-Clinet feels a little muffled on the nose and, as I commented before, just lacks the brightness and zest of recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with good depth and dry tannins. This is an introverted Feytit-Clinet with dried blood and black pepper toward the finish; a couple of bottles suggest this might have a bit of Brettanomyces. It’s not a bad wine, though one I’d drink in the first decade of its life—a rare dropped-catch in a run of excellent vintages for this Pomerol estate.

The 2021 Feytit-Clinet is a pretty understated release for this property, where the wines are often larger in scale. Soft contours wrap around a core of plum, red cherry, spice, new leather and white pepper. As it was en primeur, the 2021 is a relatively open-knit, accessible Feytit-Clinet that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Sweet floral and spice notes grace the silky finish.

Smoky and meaty nose with bacon, lard and lots of grilled herbs to the dark cherries. A hint of espresso and white pepper, too. Juicy, medium-bodied on the palate with crunchy fruit nicely woven into the creamy, fine-grained tannins. Fluid and succulent in the lengthy but elegant finish. Better from 2024.
