Tasting notes
As with his Kabinetts, Lauer’s pickers performed a careful selection across numerous sites in order to acquire ripe but healthy fruit that he deemed suitable for low-alcohol, unabashedly but not obtrusively sweet Riesling mit Prädikat. Here, though, the berries selected were bronze rather than green-golden. Surprisingly developed fusel, smoky and mossy notes share the nose with intimations of white peach, white currant and kiwi that then lusciously inform a subtly creamy, supremely delicate palate. Fresh lime lends exhilarating juiciness to a superbly sustained and judiciously sweet finish strikingly transparent to mineral and herbal nuances. And this is “just” the estate’s “regular” Spätlese!

Gently honeyed lemon and lime on the nose and palate. Barely richer tasting than some of the Kabinetts. Though the sweetness shows in the apricot flavours on the finish. Intense and long. (JH)
Precise on the nose and excitingly precise the 2014 Kupp Spätlese Fass 7 is pure and slate-like on the nose and offers a very delicate and coolish Riesling aroma. Medium to full-bodied, lush and intense on the palate this elegant textbook Spätlese does not lose its mineral precision and finesse because it was only made by overripe but not botrytisized berries. This is a great Saar Spätlese and a must buy of the vintage.
