Largely Mourvèdre matured in new barrels, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape la Part des Anges offers up notes of plum, cola and spice but also some brighter, redder-toned fruit. It's full-bodied, supple, nicely complex and juicy, with touches of cedar and vanilla joining softly dusty tannins on the lingering finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Part Des Anges is more modern in style, with some toasty, spicy notes, but it has incredible purity in its darker cassis fruits as well as cured meats, pepper, and gamey nuances. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated, it’s easily my favorite in the lineup today. It should have 15+ years of longevity. I found the 2020 reds from Raymond Usseglio to be a little lifted and difficult to read. These will hopefully come together with a year or two in bottle and justify the lofty barrel reviews. The same can’t be said about the white, however. These showed brilliantly, with the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Pure Roussanne unquestionably one of the top whites in the vintage.

70% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah. Dark, intense, powerful Châteauneuf-du-Pape with sweet cherry fruit, prominent acidity and some oak character coming through. Fresh finish. Lots of weight and appeal on the palate, perhaps lacking a bit of subtlety. (AWH)
