From 56-year-old vines, the 2019 Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann Gewurztraminer opens with a deep, clear, intense, finely spicy, leafy and mineral bouquet with notes of crushed salts and rocks, flint stones, lemongrass, citrus thyme, smoke, just-ripe mangoes, figs, lychees, kumquats, candied lemons, lemon peel, lemon chutney and herbal, iodine aromas. Full-bodied, rich, intense and very elegant on the palate, with an intense and persistent mineral structure, this is a tight and powerful yet fresh and savory Rangen with fine tannins and an almost drying mineral complexity on the finish that leaves the palate with candied sugar, lemon, tannin bitters and tons of salt. This is a great Gewürztraminer bottled in February 2021 with 14.2% stated alcohol and 9.5 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.

This is a massively concentrated and enormously structured wine with so much smoke and spice, but thereâs also so much rose aroma that it comes off as charming rather than imposing. And the giant freshness at the finish pulls you back for more of this astonishing gewurz. Beautifully integrated touch of sweetness. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
