Drink 2026-2050, Vinfolio, Jun 2022

The 2016 Soldera really is an exciting wine. The sheer amplitude of aromas is extraordinary – strawberry fruit, old rose perfume, a wild floral note and a fiery earthy, irony ferric tone that starts to take over with a bit of air. It is the energy on the palate that is so wonderful, accompanied by thick, tender, almost elastic-like tannins that make the mouth water. The wine has such vibrancy and a really long finish. Outstanding.

The 2016 Toscana Sangiovese finds Gianfranco Soldera at his best. A complex, dynamic wine, the 2016 possesses explosive energy to match its electric personality. Macerated cherry, herbs, dried rose petals, cedar and wildflowers are some of the many notes that come alive in the glass. The wine’s deep, layered character and overall nuance are the stuff dreams are made of. Superb.

Magnum. 'Very easy vintage with sufficient rain at the right time.' Picked from 23 September. All of 17,000 bottles produced. Glorious! Such life and length. Notably aromatic. Superb. Just a perfect, vibrant expression of what this estate can deliver: precision, fruit, freshness and a uniquely transparent expression of ripe, southern Tuscan Sangiovese. (JR)

One of Italy's most sought-after and collectible unicorn wines, the Soldera Case Basse 2016 100% Sangiovese is mysterious, illusive and hard to find. From a classic vintage, the wine's personality is extremely delicate and ethereal, following lock in step with the house style passionately promoted and secured by the late Gianfranco Soldera. The man himself, remembered as an outspoken genius who made invaluable contributions to the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, died in 2019. This vintage was made under his watchful eye, and it ties in nicely with recent past releases of this wine (once a Brunello) now labeled rather matter-of-factly (and with a tinge of provocation) 100% Sangiovese. The bouquet offers wild cherry, blue flower, candied orange peel and hints of rusty nail. The mouthfeel is polished, fine and silky. There is a hint of iodine or medicinal gel that will not appeal to everyone, but then again, beauty is sometimes found in the unexpected.

Soldera

Soldera is one of the most highly rated, fiercely collected wines of Italy. The winery is based in the Brunello di Montalcino, however the estate is no longer labelled as a Brunello, following a fall out with the consortium. Made from 100% Sangiovese, the wine is currently bottled as a Toscana IGT.
