Tasting notes
The 2019 Beyond the Clouds is spicy and intense, with nuances of chamomile, ginger, cardamom, clove and even a hint of bergamot, like walking into a house of exotic tea. Beneath it all is a vivid core of crushed apple and hazelnut. It washes across the palate with silken textures carrying ripe orchard fruits and hints of sour citrus, all supported by tantalizing acidity. There’s so much pent-up energy here, as the 2019 finishes lightly-structured and packed full of lemony concentration. It will take some cellaring to bring this rendition of Beyond the Clouds fully into focus, which happens to be the most harmonious and exciting vintage of this wine that I have ever tasted. Beyond the Clouds is primarily Chardonnay, co-fermented with a number of other white varieties in new barriques and then refined on the lees for another ten months.

With a storied tradition, this is one of the iconic whites of northern Italy. The Elena Walch 2019 Alto Adige Beyond the Clouds is a blend of Chardonnay and other complementary grapes. Past editions of this wine were much more floral and fragrant, but this 2019 edition takes on a drier and sharper personality. Aromas of white peach, minty apple and toasted almond are highlighted here. The oak adds to the spiciness of the bouquet and helps to flesh out the medium to almost full-weight mouthfeel. All this is capped off by zesty and spicy acidity. Some 14,000 bottles were released.
