The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has opened up on the nose since I last tasted it, but it is still primal. Dominated by freshly squeezed lime and crushed stone, this has plenty of energy, but it is tightly coiled. The palate is ripe and slightly candied on the entry, yet slightly bitter in a positive sense, and the acidity is not quite simpatico with the rest of the wine—time will cohere those together. Quite waxy-textured on the finish that demonstrates plenty of extract, time is required to reveal the real tension here. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, orange oil, honeycomb, iodine, toasted nuts, smoke and spices, the 2019 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and textural, with a rich core of fruit, tangy acids and a long, saline finish. This has turned out well.
The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a strict bouquet, perhaps a little closed after bottling, though it does not take much to reveal an inner core of energy. The palate is full of tension: a killer line of acidity that effortlessly slices through the citrus fruit with exceptional precision on the finish. This will surely fulfil the promise that it has showed since birth.
