Side-by-side with Clos des Ormes, this is staggeringly deeper in colour, presenting a saturated black-purple, more typical of Malbec. Very small berries, apparently. Deep, brooding nose with some dark chocolate from oak, dried herbs and a touch of fresh earth. With its powerful tannins and black fruit, and spicy length, this wouldn’t be an archetypal Gevrey – or even Pinot – but this has some quality in its own unique style. This certainly won’t please everyone! (TJ)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru is noticeably deep in color. It has an intense nose of black currant and bilberry fruit, the oak a tad more conspicuous than in other cuvées. The medium-bodied palate offers grainy tannins. Quite dense and minerally but missing a little complexity toward the finish. Not bad.
