Tasting notes
The 2019 Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay GG pairs the flinty/stony purity of crushed blue slate with the fantastic ripeness of the Riesling fruit in this extraordinary, steep terroir. This is very precise and pure, with fascinating terroir and vintage expression. Round and almost creamy on the palate, this is a crystalline and very elegant Riesling Grand Cru that will also propitiate your friends in Alsace since the malic acid is pretty reduced here if present at all. This is a rather soft yet still refined and elegant Uhlen with lingering juiciness and stimulating, crystalline, ripe and salty acidity as well as crunchy slate grip. A fascinating and unique 2019 in the Heymann-Löwenstein portfolio. Tasted from the bottle in October 2020.

AP number 17 20. There is some purer fruit on the nose here but there is still that off-putting (to me) floral overlay. Then some sourness on the end. But Sebastian Thomas of Howard Ripley tells me he was very impressed by this set of wines in Wiesbaden, so perhaps my misgivings are ill-founded? (JR)
