Tasting notes
A pure expression of Sangiovese planted about 40 years before this harvest, the Vecchie Terre di Montefili 2016 Anfiteatro opens to a lean garnet and ruby-tinged appearance. There is a vein of bitterness to this wine that speaks of the cool woods and winds that characterize this corner of Chianti Classico, in Greve in Chianti. The wine sports aromas of white cherry, tart berry, grilled herb and powdered licorice. There is a subtle touch of crushed peppercorn on the finish. This bottle should continue to flesh out and evolve up to the 10-year mark and likely beyond. Production is limited to 3,350 bottles in this vintage.

The 2016 Anfiteatro, the estate's top Sangiovese, is another wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Wild, savory and explosive in the glass, the 2016 possesses tremendous depth and pure, unbridled power. Sangiovese is rarely this wild, this expressive and this full of personality. Readers just have to be a bit patient. Maybe more than a bit.
