88% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. 20-30 mm of rain just before the harvest reduced the intensity of the fruit. pH was higher than in 2020.  Deep crimson. The very beginning of tertiary notes here, a suggestion of undergrowth but still plenty of dark-red fruit. Smooth, polished tannins. Harmonious and approachable now with food, a little bit austere without. But then what is Bordeaux if not a food wine? (JH)

The 2019 Château d'Aiguilhe has a lifted nose of blackberry, raspberry, cedar and black pepper, composed though not amazingly complex. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite a bit of extraction here, however I need to see a little more terroir expression on the finish. Not bad, though not as memorable as I would have liked. Possibly just closing down? Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

88% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. Aged in oak barrels (30% new) for 16 months. Wholesome berry-fruit notes with a touch of spice. Palate lively and fresh with a red-fruit (cherry) nuance and the chalky terroir apparent. Polished tannins provide plenty of length and drive. Balance and structure for ageing. (JL)
